Boundaries

High heels delicately crossed the polished wooden floorboards which were furnished with a velvet sofa, red as rich blood. Furthermore, a dressing table accompanied by a chair enhanced the undesirable looks of the room (The capacity of the room hardly appeared to differ to the size of an elevator), as well as a mirror to admire one’s vain self. The bedroom door was shut with a ‘creak’ – sounding like the lid of an untouched coffin sliding open. However, the dressing table appeared the most interesting, spread with assorted perfumes and other incredulous bottles of woman’s desires spread carelessly across the table.

Constantly a jewellery box shaped like a pearl would gradually open to reveal a wooden ballerina eternally twirling with an annoying twinkle of a melody which sounded like it was sung from the distant stars. Unusually, the box didn’t close with a moan as the melodies ceased.

Surprisingly, the ballerina’s wooden hand which was as pointy as the sharpened led of a pencil began to twitch uncomfortably. She was alive! Her shoulders proceeded to twist and stiffness reeled through her wooden body as she attempted to shake the pain off. Then, identifying her hand and her elegant red tutu she waved her arms like the wings of an angel with more comfort, and then attempted to prepare to dance. However, when she tried to spring out of her position in her jewellery box, she jerked from side to side for her wooden shoe was attached into the centre of the jewellery box!

With a painstaking effort, the ballerina pushed her wooden shoe back and forth and the jewellery box failed to keep her in place resulting with the ballerina thrown across the width of the dressing table. She gently picked herself up and to her uttermost delight she realised that she was freed from her box!

The lights on the dressing table served as a spotlight as the ballerina could finally fulfil a wish she always wished to pursue – a dance. She curtseyed to an imaginary crowd and then began a few balancés and pirouetted so swiftly that her red tutu was simply a blur. Delighted at being freed from the wooden box, she performed sissonnes and assemblés to her hearts content. Unfortunately, the ballerina realised the fact that she was dancing in a very congested area as she took two strides and leaped off the dressing table.

As gravity pulled her down, her arms made rapid movements to save herself by grabbing onto the dressing table’s chair. There was a sickening crash as she met the cold wooden floorboards; her wooden body dissected completely and splinters of her body scattered about.

Yet, on the dressing table, the jewellery box continued playing the disturbing melodies without a twirl from the wooden ballerina.
